Carrara is a few Kilometers far from the most interesting destinations in Liguria and Northen Tuscany. You can easily reach Portovenere and the five lands,Lunigiana and her medieval small villages, in August Sarzana and her little interesting old town center with the antique little market; Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio with their beaches and their promenades full of shops.Carrara is mainly known for her white marble quarries that were used by the most famous sculptors of the past and present. In our town there are many artistic workshops that create many objects like ornaments and statues. There is the Marble Museum, the Marble Shool and the School of Fine Arts. Every year there are demontrations that recall our traditions like the "Lizzatura", a manual technique that, in the past, was the way blocks of marbles were carried. The IMM, Internazionale Marmi e Macchine, is where the marble fair takes place and is visited by international buyers and proponents. The "scolpire all'aperto" symposium is where many foreign artists sculpt their works, in an open-air place.
